Flags Lowered for National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service

Statement

Date: Oct. 10, 2014
Issues: Infrastructure

"Every October, America pays tribute to the brave firefighters who gave their lives in the line of duty over the past year. This weekend, our Nation recognizes 107 fallen heroes, whose deaths serve as a solemn reminder of the daily perils and selfless sacrifices of first responders.

"This year is an especially poignant occasion, as among those 107 men and women are the names of Arizona's 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots. We are forever grateful to the Yarnell 19, all past and present firefighters, and all first responders, for their noble service. They devote and knowingly risk their lives to defend people and property -- and while they do not seek our praise, they have earned it eternally. Let us continue to pray for our fallen firefighters and their families, and for the safety of all who continue to serve in this honorable and heroic position.

"In commemoration of National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend, I have ordered that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset, Sunday, October 12, 2014. I encourage all Arizonans to join in this tribute."
